I have had many rewarding...
.... conversations during these two conference days in Gävle.
Much about social issues, work and a little bit of fiction.
Among other things, I was asked by the Uppsala Writers' Society if I would like to have a book table for sale during Culture Night in Uppsala on 13 September, which I definitely want to do.
Last year was a memorable experience.
Culture Night is full of curious and inquisitive people who want to talk about writing, imagination and stories.
It is a time when previously closed doors are opened a crack and creativity comes to life.
Could it get any better for someone who loves all this?
It also turned out that five colleagues had read my novels over the summer and came up to me to say how much they enjoyed them.
Just the fact that people continue to read them makes me happy, and when they say they like them, it warms my heart.
These were the highlights of the term's initial work conference at the Winn Hotel in Gävle.
It's interesting how we sometimes move around places without seeing what's around us.
On my walk to the conference, I discovered several beautiful bronze statues.
My favourites were Getgubben, made by Allan Runefelt and donated to Gävle by the GDJ Foundation, and Vallpojken by Pere Pujols.
When I look for information about the statues, I see that Vallpojken has evoked a lot of emotion over the years. The artist from Spain is dead, and in 2008, the statue was vandalised when someone cut off one of the bronze statue's arms.
I found a letter to the editor in which a man wrote that the missing arm caused him deep sadness and anger every time he walked past it.
The missing arm also became a mystery that was discussed in various forums.
Source: "The arm of the Vallpojken statue is still missing.
The Art Centre is now applying for 150,000 Swedish kronor from the municipal council to be able to cast a new arm.
Last spring, the bronze sculpture in Stortorget in Gävle was vandalised. The arm of the flute-playing Vallpojken was broken off and has been missing ever since, despite an appeal in the Arbetarbladet newspaper. Gävle Art Centre, which is responsible for public artworks in Gävle, has waited in the hope that the arm will be returned anonymously or in a public place. The sculpture is a donation from the Gefle-Dala Railway Fund."
Some reflections from the conference are how incredibly important it is to raise questions about “what higher education is about and why it exists”. If we lose sight of the big picture, the small, concrete issues become blind spots.
There was a lively discussion among the colleagues.
Another reflection is how wrong things can go when complex issues are handled without sensitivity by the person leading the discussion.
My antennae go up when fiction comes up, and a colleague recommended John Ajvide's horror books, which she enjoyed.
I have read Let the Right One In and Kindness – maybe it's worth trying another one.
"Plot: NOMINATED FOR BEST CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR 2022 by the Swedish Crime Writers' Academy
It is Midsummer's Eve and the table on the jetty is set with fine china. Businessman Olof Helander's guests from China and France are in attendance. Now it's time to party in the most Swedish way possible. Then an open boat glides towards the jetty. Two masked men stand up. Half a minute later, the midsummer idyll has turned into a bloodbath.
Crime writer and former police officer Julia Malmros has been commissioned to write the sequel to a well-known crime series.
A friend and I decided to pay for an overnight stay to survive.
Through Bokning AB Fredrik and his discounts, we found a reasonably priced room at the Elite Hotel, which was built in 1901 and has a rich history, including visits by King Oscar II.
We tried their mocktails after nine o'clock...and concluded, matter-of-factly and thoughtfully, that we prefer the real thing.
