Kvällspromenad och tankar i rörelse
Eleonora ställde sig på vågen igår med Mozart i famnen och blev obehagligt överraskad.
Från att ha varit mager när vi reste på grund av hyperyreos (giftstruma) så har vår lilla blandkatt gått ner ytterligare 300 gram i sommar...
Han ligger mestadels på vår säng och orkar inte göra mycket.
Det känns otroligt sorgligt att se hur vår lilla familjemedlem lider - vi får se om veterinären kan göra något mer än vad som redan är gjort.
Jag läste nyligen en krönika om vad lite det är som dagens ungdomar kan idag.
Istället för att lära sig om det som verkligen betyder något för överlevnad såsom självhushåll, hur rör byts och fungerar, hur man lägger om takpannor så kan dagens generation unga (onödiga) begrepp som genus och hegemoni.
Artikeln bet sig fast och har följt med mig i tanken idag.
Visst finns det en poäng med att lägga mer tid på praktisk livskunskap i skola och utbildning.
Hemkunskapsämnet fyller lite den funktionen.
Kunskaper som handlar om reell överlevnad utan tekniska hjälpmedel blir troligtvis än mer viktiga i tider av krismedvetenhet.
För, vad händer om allt vi förlitar oss på, såsom teknik och infrastruktur, inte längre finns som stöd? Har vi de kunskaper som vi behöver för att överleva då?
Troligtvis inte.
Samtidigt kan vi inte kunna allt och det är därför vi behöver varandra. En viktig aspekt som betonas i 'prepperns överlevnadshandbok' är just vikten av att samarbeta.
Den ensamma preppern kommer inte att klara sig länge, just för att ingen människa kan allt.
Men frågan om vad som räknas som nytta kvarstår.
Det jag sett från mitt håll är att även om konkret överlevnadskunskap är viktig så behövs även abstrakt kunskap för överlevnad.
Olika kunskaper fyller nämligen olika funktioner.
Texten om seendet växer fram och jag landar lite vid följande (översatta) citat från pragmatikern John Dewey:
En person som är medveten om empiriska och kvantitativa fakta kommer sannolikt att vara ”vaksam på att göra vissa iakttagelser som annars skulle undgå honom; han kommer att kunna tolka vissa fakta som annars skulle vara förvirrande och missförstådda” (SSE, 20, kursivering tillagd).
”Teori är i slutändan, som det så väl har sagts, det mest praktiska av allt, eftersom denna utvidgning av uppmärksamhetsfältet bortom närliggande syften och önskningar så småningom resulterar i skapandet av bredare och mer långtgående syften och gör det möjligt för oss att använda ett mycket bredare och djupare spektrum av förhållanden och medel än vad som kom till uttryck i observationen av primitiva praktiska syften”. Det är alltid roligt att växla ord med våra grannar.
Idag stötte vi på nytt på vår kära granne Michel som var på väg till sin Madame.
När vi pratat på ett tag om väder, hälsa och familj så pilade han vidare och inom kort hörde vi hans röst längre ner på gatan i samtal med våra grannar från Toulouse.
När vi hunnit fram till Jacques och Valerie så hade Michel redan vandrat vidare och när Valerie fick syn på oss utbrast hon glatt:
"Jag hörde just att ni ska till Djävulsbron för att bada. Härligt!"
Jungeltrummor är effektiva små instrument.
Efter flera fruktlösa inbjudningar hem till Jacque och Valerie har vi äntligen sett till att få in en träff på måndag kväll.
Det ska bli roligt att få ta del av deras erfarenheter, om än med min taffliga franska.
Efter middagen när det blivit svalare tog vi en tur ner till hamnen.
Det satt fortfarande människor på restaurangerna trots att klockan var runt tio.
I hamnen låg båtar förtöjda med människor som var i full färd med att äta kvällsmat. Lågmäld musik sipprade ut från högtalare.
Nere vid piren, med blicken över lagunen, var det vilsamt att låta tankarna vandra.

From being skinny when we left due to hyperthyroidism (toxic goitre), our little mixed-breed cat has lost another 400 grams this summer...
He mostly lies on my and Fredrik's bed and doesn't have the energy to do much.
It is incredibly sad to see our little family member suffering – we will see if the vet can do anything more than what has already been done.
I am continuing to work on my eyesight and recently read an article about a young woman who wrote a column about how little young people know today.
Instead of learning about things that really matter for survival, such as self-sufficiency, how to change and repair pipes, and how to replace roof tiles, today's generation of young people know (unnecessary) concepts such as gender and hegemony.
The article has been on my mind today.
There is certainly a point in spending more time on practical life skills in school and education. Home economics fulfils this function to some extent.
Knowledge about real survival without technical aids is likely to become even more important in times of crisis awareness.
Because what happens if everything we rely on, such as technology and infrastructure, is no longer there to support us? Will we have the knowledge we need to survive?
Probably not.
At the same time, we cannot know everything, which is why we need each other. An important aspect emphasised in “The Prepper's Survival Handbook” is precisely the importance of cooperation.
The lone prepper will not survive for long, precisely because no human being knows everything, regardless of the extent of their hubris.
The text on vision is taking shape, and I am settling on the following quote from pragmatist John Dewey:
“[s]cientific findings are of practical utility, and the situation is wrongly interpreted when it is used to disparage the value of science in the art of education. What it militates against is the transformation of scientific findings into rules of action. (SSE, 19; see also SSE, 29–30)
A person who is aware of empirical and quantitative facts will probably be “on the alert to make certain observations which would otherwise escape him; he will be enabled to interpret some facts which would otherwise be confused and misunderstood” (SSE, 20, emphasis added).
“Theory is in the end, as has been well said, the most practical of all things, because this widening of the range of attention beyond nearby purpose and desire eventually results in the creation of wider and farther-reaching purposes and enables us to use a much wider and deeper range of conditions and means than were expressed in the observation of primitive practical purposes”. (SSE, 18, emphasis added).
“Preoccupation with attaining some direct end or practical utility always limits scientific inquiry. For it restricts the field of attention and thought, since we note only those things that are immediately connected with what we want to do or get at the moment. Science signifies that we carry our observations and thinking further afield and become interested in what happens on its own account.” (SSE, 18–19, emphasis added)
It's always fun to chat with our neighbours.
Today we ran into our dear neighbour Michel again, who was on his way to visit his wife.
After chatting for a while about the weather, health and family, he hurried on, and soon we heard his voice further down the street talking to our neighbours from Toulouse.
By the time we reached Jacques and Valerie, Michel had already moved on, and when Valerie saw us, she exclaimed cheerfully:
‘I just heard that you're going to the Devil's Bridge to swim. Wonderful!’
Jungle drums are effective little instruments.
After several fruitless invitations to their home, we finally managed to arrange a meeting for Monday evening.
It will be fun to hear about their experiences, even with my clumsy French.
After dinner, when it had cooled down, we took a walk down to the harbour. There were still people sitting in the restaurants even though it was around ten o'clock.
Boats are moored in the harbour with people busy eating their evening meal and quiet music trickling out of speakers.
Down by the pier, it's peaceful to let your mind wander.
